Know your pricing
Competitive pricing that fits your business needs
American Express rates are generally based on your industry and annual American Express Charge volume. We generally charge the same rate for transactions using all Card types.1Our competitors typically have more complex pricing structures. In addition, there are no monthly minimum charge requirements or annual fees.2
We also offer flexible payment methods.
Net Pay:  The Discount, fees, Chargebacks, and credits are deducted from our payment to you.
Gross Pay:  The Discount, fees, Chargebacks, and credits are debited separately from our payments to you.
  1. Lower rates may apply to certain Card types, such as Prepaid or Corporate Purchasing Cards.
  2. In addition to Discount Rate, merchants may be subject to other fees and assessments. Merchants whose charge volume falls below a level that we may establish from time to time may elect a low monthly flat-fee pricing option in lieu of a transaction-based rate. Determine your payment cycle
Choose how quickly you get paid
As part of the American Express network, you can decide how often you'd like to get paid - in 3, 15, or 30 days, giving you an extra level of control and predictability with payments deposited directly to your business's bank account. If you choose a 15-day or 30-day Payment Plan, your Discount Rate would be reduced by 0.08% or 0.18%, respectively. To change your payment cycle, call Merchant Services at 1-800-528-5200
To make payment reconciliation simpler, you can receive the Merchant statement by mail or e-mail based on the particular needs of your business.

Manage Chargebacks and Inquiries
Manage Chargebacks and Inquiries quickly online
A Card Member may question a Charge appearing on their billing statement. American Express responds in one of two ways:
  • We send you an Inquiry via email or postal mail requesting more information to support your claim, to support the validity of the Charge.
  • We automatically issue a Chargeback for the Disputed Charge if we have sufficient information to resolve the Card Member dispute.
If you receive an Inquiry, you'll have 20 days to respond with specific documentation. We may issue a Chargeback if you authorize us, if the response is not received or is insufficient.
When you set up your merchant account to handle disputes online, you can respond to up to 20 cases at a time, receive automatic email notifications for new and urgent inquiries, and attach supporting documents electronically. This helps you minimize response time, reduce unnecessary paperwork and save money by reducing no-reply chargebacks.

Test your terminal
Before your first transaction, test your terminal to make sure it's working properly and you're able to accept American Express® Cards.
  • Choose the "Sale" key on your terminal, or follow the procedures for completing a keyed manual transaction.
  • Key in Card number 3739-532443-61001, expiration 12/XX (last two digits of current year), and submit a charge for $1.
  • If your terminal asks you for additional information, press "Enter/Send" or enter "0000" to bypass.
  • Receive a six-digit Authorization Approval code, which means you're ready to accept American Express® Cards.
You can process a void to offset the transaction using the same Card number and expiration date. If you don't receive an Approval code or receive an error message, contact your terminal provider.
Upgrade to an EMV-enabled terminal to strengthen security for card-present transactions through increased card authentication and help avoid fraud at the point of sale. Call American Express Merchant Services to learn more.
